    Location
    Valais is situated in the southwestern part of the country.
    Climate
    Due to the high mountains surrounding the plains of the Rhône, the climate of central Valais is particularly dry, much drier than in the rest of Switzerland.
    Soils
    Valais vineyard soils vary by zone: granite and gneiss dominate the lower valley, limestone becomes more prominent upstream, schist occurs around Sion, and Rhône sediments contribute sandstone and marl to the valley-floor vineyards.
