    Location
    It was named after the traditional region of Rheingau (meaning "Rhine district"), the wine region is situated in the state of Hesse, where it constitutes part of the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis administrative district.
    Climate
    Rheingau has a very mild, sheltered climate in the rain shadow of the wooded Taunus heights; most vineyards are on strongly sun-exposed south-facing slopes.
    Soils
    Rheingau’s main soil groups are volcanic soils, slate, Keuper and muschelkalk, and loess/loam; higher sites have lighter weathered soils, while sites nearer the Rhine increasingly include loess, loam and clay.
