The quick answer: cocktail strength varies far more than most people expect — from drinks well into double-digit ABV down to ones a fraction of that. Below are both ends of the spectrum, ranked by the measured ABV of each recipe, plus what "standard drinks" actually tells you.

Two numbers, two different questions

Before the rankings, the distinction that matters:

• ABV (% alcohol by volume) tells you how concentrated the drink is — how strong each sip tastes.
• US standard drinks tells you how much alcohol is in the whole serving — a small high-ABV drink and a large low-ABV drink can carry the same amount.

A boozy sipper can be high-ABV but a single standard drink; a tall highball can be low-ABV but add up. We show both so you can choose on the right axis.

Strongest cocktails, by real ABV

Ranked highest-ABV first, among eligible WhatDrink recipes (complete, quality-checked profile). A drink with no ABV value is left out entirely, never treated as 0. This reflects our current governed recipe dataset, not every cocktail in existence.

Ranked lowest-ABV first among genuinely alcoholic drinks, among eligible WhatDrink recipes. We include only recipes our data classifies as alcoholic — drinks tagged "optional alcohol" (essentially a mocktail with a dash of something like bitters, which can read as a fraction of a percent ABV) are excluded, so this is a fair "lighter alcoholic cocktail" list, not a near-mocktail list. How we chose these

• Source: each ABV and standard-drink figure is the recipe's own measured value, the same shown on its drink page.
• NULL is not zero. A recipe without an ABV value is excluded from both lists.
• "Light" means lower ABV, not "healthy" or "safe." A lighter drink still contains alcohol; a larger serving of a light drink can carry as much alcohol as a small strong one — that's exactly why the standard-drinks column is there.
• Deterministic: ties break alphabetically, so the order is stable.

Choosing by occasion

Is a higher-ABV cocktail "more alcohol"? Not necessarily — it's more concentrated. Check the standard-drinks column for the total.
